Bob and I met in California, and have a love for it that makes us return year after year. Always a bit fascinated with the little California history I knew, I wanted to know more. Although this book was written for older elementary aged children, I truly believe any person would benefit greatly from this study, and there are several reasons why.
First of all, as I read it, I discerned truth. Second, the author’s passion for her subject is evident. Third, there are many source documents that give credence to the writing. Fourth, this is the only book I have ever read that gives a Christian perspective about “Indians,” and Lesha even explains why she doesn’t call them “Native Americans.”
Frankly, I put off teaching of reading much about Indians to our children for about 14 years, because I was not pleased with any of the books I could find on the subject. They did not have the element of truth for which I was looking. This one does!
Lesha explains how Christianity moved westward to California, and its effect on all that happened there. I have not seen this information anywhere else written in such a friendly manner. So, whether you are interested in Indians and/or California history, this book is waiting for you.
Teacher’s Supplement
The Teacher’s Supplement contains “all the fun stuff,” as Lesha calls it, and not only those, but the source documents to support her writing. I find them absolutely fascinating. It also explains and has a form for doing a “Character Sketch,” which helps the student gain a different perspective from studying a person’s life through the eyes of God. The Teacher’s Supplement also includes a California Date Song, geographical information and maps, co-op ideas and schedule, and project ideas. His California Story is highly recommended!
