This is a courageously, politically-incorrect, aggressively Christian course in California history. It teaches facts we parents never learned when we attended school, while contradicting secular texts on many points. For example, in discussing the questions of “Were the Indians Slaves?” Myers ends with the statement: “Far from treating the Indians as slaves, the Catholic missionaries were training them to be free—free from hunger and want, free from the bondage of the ungodly religion, and free to learn how to honor and serve the Lord” (p. 89). The 282-page student text contains reading material and comprehension questions. It is heavily illustrated with photos and drawings. The teachers’ supplement is essential for the complete course, although the text can stand on its own as a source of information.
Teacher’s Supplement The teacher’s supplement provides activity ideas, projects, oral discussion questions, tests, source documents, field trip ideas, and suggestions for further reading. The source documents are presented with additional discussion regarding some of the challenging topics.
This course can be very simply presented with a student completing the reading independently and by utilizing only a few of the suggestions from the teacher’s supplement. Or it can be used as the foundation for extensive unit studies based on each topic. For example, in the Gold Rush Unit, students might do “character sketches” on James Marshall, Lewis Manly, or other significant people; study and memorize key dates, learn a “California History Song,” identify geographical locations, add a number of assignments to their notebooks, and answer questions.
