Notice the word “practical” in the subtitle of this book, because it really is one of the most practical books to come along in quite awhile. Lesha Myers tackles the thorny subject of evaluating (grading) our children’s work with wisdom, insight, and total understanding of the realities faced by homeschooling parents.
She first discusses the idea of evaluation, helping parents to formulate their own biblically-based philosophy in this regard. She even presents explanations of many forms of evaluation including tests, portfolios, mastery-designed curricula, point systems, and more. Included is an interesting and valuable discussion regarding effort and attitude and their place in the evaluation process. Finally, Lesha offers specific examples and possible approaches for each subject area, plus reproducible forms and charts at the back of the book.
Making the Grade is a valuable tool for parents with children at all grade levels. There’s nothing else available that offers so many different approaches to evaluation, covers all the subject areas, AND includes plenty of explanation and examples so that parents can immediately put the ideas into practice. In addition, parents of teens will especially appreciate the extra attention Lesha gives to high school transcripts and computing grade point averages.
